Plug ACH risk monitoring efforts into all sources of origination

May 2010

As an originating depository financial institution (ODFI), you realize the importance of knowing your originators. But, always keeping an eye on each of them can be a different matter. Is your institution managing your automated clearing house (ACH) origination risk across all originators in a consolidated manner? That’s just one of the key benefits of the FedACH Risk® Origination Monitoring Service. The service enables consistent, comprehensive and centralized monitoring for both internal and external origination, regardless of network entry point or ACH software.

A consolidated view of origination

As an ACH Operator, FedACH Services is the central collection point for your institution’s origination volume. This means you can monitor your origination risk at the terminal point — the last consolidation point before payments change hands. By using the FedACH Risk Origination Monitoring Service, you can have a consolidated view of all of your ACH origination across multiple processing silos and varying processing relationships. Monitoring risk at the terminal point simplifies management of all the various technologies and processing relationships that can be involved prior to the transactions reaching the terminal point.

Questions to ask when determining origination sources

When deciding how best to monitor origination risk, you should include all sources originating on your routing transit number (RTN). Consider these key questions to help you determine ACH network entry points:

  • Does a service provider or processor sending point originate on behalf of your institution?
  • Do your institution’s corporate / business customers originate with FedACH on your RTN?
  • Do your institution’s online banking customers originate on your RTN?
  • Does your institution’s internal loan department originate entries?
  • Does your institution’s personnel or payroll department originate entries?
  • Does your institution’s payroll, ATM or remote deposit capture provider originate transactions using your RTN after operating hours?
  • Does your institution have transactions originating on your RTN that you can only see after the fact?

Comprehensive monitoring made easy

If you are concerned with monitoring your origination risk, the good news is that you do not need to monitor against all of these various ACH network entry points separately. The FedACH Risk Origination Monitoring Service takes advantage of FedACH Services’ convenient position as an ACH Operator to streamline monitoring of all origination, all together, and all at once.

Not all ACH origination risk is externally generated. With the FedACH Risk Origination Service’s ability to monitor comprehensively across all sources of origination, both internal and external origination risk monitoring can be accomplished using the same tools. The service can help your institution stay on guard against the unintentional extra zero, as well as against intentional attempts to defraud.
