Ushering in the new year with new coin releases

January 2009

In November 2008, the United States Mint’s 10-year 50 State Quarters® Program ended with the issuance of the Hawaii quarter — the 50th and last coin in the program. As we usher in 2009, the Federal Reserve Banks are preparing for 14 new United States Mint coin releases, including four Presidential $1 Coins, six quarters honoring the District of Columbia and the United States Territories, as well as four different one-cent coins honoring the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln's birth and the 100th anniversary of the first issuance of the Lincoln cent.

Presidential $1 Coin

In continuation of the Presidential $1 Coin Program, the Federal Reserve Banks will distribute four new designs issued by the United States Mint in 2009. The Federal Reserve Banks will maintain the special ordering arrangements available for previous releases. Orders for each coin can be placed by depository institutions beginning two weeks prior and continuing in the four weeks following the official public release date.

The four coins being released in 2009 and their public release dates are:

Dollar Coin Release Date
William Henry Harrison February 19
John Tyler May 21
James K. Polk August 20
Zachary Taylor November 19

Detailed ordering information for the Presidential $1 Coin is available online.
