Depository institutions may deposit food coupons at the Memphis Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Upon receipt in Memphis, your institution's Federal Reserve account is credited for the amount of the food coupon deposit. Food coupons are then processed and eventually destroyed by the Federal Reserve System. Because food coupons are designed for only one use, they are not reissued by the Federal Reserve System.
Each year, the amount of paper food coupons deposited with the Federal Reserve System continues to decrease. This is a result of the electronic benefits transfer (EBT) (Off-site Link) program being introduced in various U.S. states by the Department of Agriculture (Off-site Link). EBT replaces paper food coupons with an electronic debit card.
For more information on food coupons or where to deposit them, please refer to Section 9.0 of Operating Circular 2 (PDF).
