Penny Order and Deposit Information

As a result of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s decision to end production of the U.S. penny coin, the Federal Reserve is communicating to customers anticipated changes to penny ordering and deposits as certain coin distribution locations run out of inventory.

FedCash® Services continues to operate as normal for all other cash and coin activity.

Frequently Asked Questions about Penny Deposits and Orders

The Federal Reserve is committed to facilitating the acceptance of penny deposits from banks and credit unions. All coin distribution locations providing services under arrangements with the Federal Reserve are accepting deposits of pennies.

On March 23, a subset of coin distribution locations that previously stopped fulfilling penny orders on behalf of the Federal Reserve will begin fulfilling orders again due to increased deposit activity. This increased deposit activity has increased confidence in the ability to meet orders.

The Federal Reserve will continue to monitor the flow of penny orders and deposits as these changes take effect and will evaluate further changes to penny ordering locations as needed. Please note that some coin distribution locations remain unable to fulfill penny orders due to localized inventory availability.
